Accutane Lawsuit

Accutane provided hope for individuals suffering from the severe scarring forms of acne. But the threat of dangerous side effects, including severe gastrointestinal disorders to suicidal tendencies, has put Accutane in the spotlight as a questionable, if not hazardous, acne medication. Health care providers recommending the medication were cautioned by the FDA to monitor patients for possible signs and symptoms of depression, as well as a variety of gastrointestinal disorders, including ulcerative colitis, colon cancer, Chron’s disease, inflammatory bowel disease, rectal bleeding and even colon removal.

Hoffman-LaRoche, manufacturer of the Accutane, did not inform the medical community of the possible hazards of the medication until after the FDA made the announcement.

Victims of serious gastrointestinal disorders, as well as the parents of children and other individuals suffering from depression, using the prescription medication have suffered serious health setbacks at the benefit of many who have wrongly prescribed this medication. Congressional hearings have been held surrounding the debate about Accutane, while Hoffman-LaRoche continues to dispute many of the serious side effects despite the rising number of lawsuits against the drug manufacturer and those who have prescribed the drug.

FDA Involvement

The FDA placed a black box warning on Accutane in 2008, and has since  required an extensive consent document to be signed by patients and health care providers before Accutane treatment is initiated, to ensure that all are aware of the possible dangers. The extensive consent form was required by the FDA following patient complaints. Those suffering severe side effects have long stated that they were not properly informed of the possible hazards involved with taking the medication.

Accutane Side Effects

Accutane may cause life-threatening birth defects, miscarriages, premature deliveries or death of the child. Accutane’s other side effects include allergic reactions, bone and muscular impairment, cardiovascular impairment, elevated blood cholesterol, hearing and visual disturbances, and neurological impairment.
