Accutane is a prescription medication used in the treatment of moderate to severe acne. This medication is used to treat both facial and body acne. It is also used to help smooth the scars formed by frequent outbreaks. Accutane is typically prescribed when over-the-counter medications have failed to properly address the problem. While many patients have reported success with the use of Accutane, there have also been several complaints, primarily by women.
Mild side effects reported from the use of Accutane include sunlight sensitivity, itchiness, and chapped lips. These side effects may be bothersome enough to cause the patient to discontinue use. These concerns should be discussed with a doctor. However, many more serious concerns have also been reported.
Accutane is known to cause trauma to the unborn baby if taken while a woman is pregnant. A pregnancy test should always be given before this medication is prescribed to a woman. Physical and mental disabilities have the potential of developing if this medication is taken during pregnancy. This medication is also known to cause miscarriages as well as premature births.
Depression is a common complaint among women taking Accutane. If feelings of depression or withdrawal develop, the medication should be stopped and a doctor contacted right away. Some signs of depression include changes in sleep habits, weight gain or loss, or feelings of helplessness.
Some of the more serious side effects of Accutane include stomach pain, heartburn, bone problems, elevated triglyceride levels, or swelling of the legs. Any of these issues should lead to a medical reevaluation concerning the use of this medication.
Side effects requiring immediate medical assistance include unusual muscle or joint pain, severe headaches, allergic reactions such as swelling or hives, seizures, any sudden changes in vision, chest pain, nausea or vomiting, hearing loss, difficulty breathing, or slurred speech.
Any sudden changes in the body beginning after beginning treatment with Accutane should be reported to a doctor right away. If Accutane is believed to be the cause of any bodily injury, an attorney should be contacted to find out if there is any legal recourse available.
